Sentence correction

Hi dear teachers,

Could you please take a look at the following sentences and tell me which sentences are correct and which are not?

Here are the sentences:

1)- This is different form what I had expected it to be.

(Is past perfect tense correct here? Or should I use the simple past tense? Because the first part of our sentence 'This is different from'  is in the present tense, won't it be better to use just past simple instead of past perfect tense in the second part? )

-Also is the use of the preposition from with different correct in the example above? Or should I say than instead of from?

2)- Would it be correct if I said  'This is different from what I expected it to be' ? And how would it be different in the meaning form #1.

I'd like to know which tense (past perfect or past simple) goes better with 'IS' and which tense (past perfect or past simple) goes better with 'WAS' in examples like those.

Thank you, teaches.

Dear grammarfreak, I'd like to say thank you very much, for your reply.

If you have time, could you please explain why different than (and not different from) works in your first sample sentence (The movie is... different than what I expected) and also why different from (but not different than) works i

I probably will let your feel the subtle difference by this link yourself rather than writing examples in my words. And I to emphasize, the difference is so subtle that sometimes it can be interchangeable. However, no matter how subtle, the difference indeed exists. I hope this link can shed some light on your question.
