sentence correction

Hi
can you tell me if this sentence is correct.

"Both X and Y are manipulated by Z due to their aspirations"

Top answer

It's grammatical, but style guides recommend 'because of' instead of 'due to' in that grammatical pattern. Both X and Y are manipulated by Z because of their aspirations. From the viewpoint of logic it's a little hard to imagine why Z would manipulate anyone, let alone both X and Y, because of their aspirations.

The problem with this sentence actually has a name: it's called an indefinite pronoun. By the time you get to the word "their", you have actually named three possible antecedents: X, Y, AND Z. So currently, the sentence actually means that X and Y are being somehow manipulated by aspirations that all three (including Z) have. It is also written in passive voice ("are manipulated") with "manipulate
