sentence correction

hi ... i want a little help of u guys ... can u please tell me if this sentence is correct ...
My daughter could not be able to attend school on 1 march 2012 ...

i wrote it for a friend n her teacher did some corrections ... i am still not sure about the corrections she made ... she changed could not be able to by was unable to .... i know that's obviously correct but ... u know ... i thought mine was not that wrong ...

Let me see if I can properly explain my point of view. The word "could" implies a possibility - it's not a fact - and as it seems, that situation already happened, therefore it is a certainty.
