Sentence correction

Hi, I have one question.

this is the sentence.

Westerners often consider it impolite not to talk - yet they are at the same time _____ about anything that no one should be caught with an open mouth containing food.

a. as ever strict as

b. as strict as they are.

this is the complete sentence question..

I think (a) is right. But a lot of people said (b) is right.

I don't know why (b) is right.

Could you help me?

Is this sentence from a very old book? Or a book that was not written by a native speaker?

It's definitely (b).

"...they are as strict as they are about anything that..." means "...there is no convention they are more strict about than the convention that..."
