Sentence correction

Hi teachers,

Is this sentence correct, I mean 'leave' is the appropriate verb?
My friend leaves to his work every day at seven.
If it isn't the appropriate verb why not, please.

Another one:
In that supermarket were a lot of shoppers last week.
Do I need 'there' in front of 'were'?

Thank in advance
