sentence correction

Hello,

When they /gave their book to the teacher /allowed to play out side.

I have to write this sentence according to what happed first and then next.

Starting word is given.

When ........................................

When they had given their book to the teacher, she allowed them to play out side.

I think this excercise is to test the usage of past perfect and simple past.

I have one doubt. I have written many sentence using "when" with siple past.

for example

When she returned back home, his parenys had gone out.

Can we use "when+past perfect"?

Thanks.

Hanu, I agree with you that simple past is what sounds more natural here with your example : 'When they gave their book to the teacher, she allowed them to play outside'. The point here with the word 'WHEN' is that both actions took place at the same time so it makes sense that the tense is the same for both clauses. Now it would have been different with the word 'AFTER' I believe, and then you could have said : 'After they had given their book to the teacher, she allowed them to play outside'.
