Dear Hanuman_2000,

I have seen this unfortunate exclamation somewhere before, Hanuman.

It is fine, although alas is a bit old-fashioned. You can separate it from the following with a comma instead, if you would like to.

PS: Greetings, Goldmund. You crept in while my computer was frozen.

Hello!

What would be the fashionable way to express such feeling? Rats? Cripes? S***?
0
Well, I don't think fashionable is an adjective that crosses the mind of the avid sports fan-- but I would opt for your third suggestion, Pieanne--

!@!#!**!! We lost the *!#!!* match!

Oh! I just meant "expressing acute disapointement", not in sports, but in more everyday life, and even in front of kids...

'Rats' is a bit too humorously old-fashioned now to express 'acute disappointment', while 'Cripes!' expresses humorous surprise.

In front of the children, I would plump for "Well, chaps, it looks like we've lost the match", followed by a rapid change of subject. (The weather, perhaps.)

This would teach them restraint and instill a proper sense of proportion.

Depends on the age of your kids. You could try "Dang!" Emotion: smile

Thank you! Emotion: smile Disgust is "dah", right? (or not?)
0
Disgust is "yuck", "ick", "eugh" Emotion: ick!, "eeu", and similar sounds.
