Sentence correctess

Hi

Please tell me if either of them is acceptable here.

Fisk is making his third attempt for/at the world record.

While the sentence with for seems easy to explain, I am not able to explain the one with "at".

To me, the idiomatic choice is "at". However, to my surprise, there are more Google hits for the version with "for". I wonder if "for" might be prevalent in AmE.
