Sentence Construction and Diction

I was studying medical by engaging in a war with my own wishes as my parents played bandwagon with me.

Is the underlined clause grammatically correct? It does not seem correct to me. It does not sound good either.

Plus, is "play bandwagon" a phrasal verb? I could not find it on google.
