Sentence Construction

When the four youths went back to their homes that they had left three years before, they became proficient in their respective subjects.
I'd like to know if the above sentence is grammatically correct. Thanks in advance.

I would personally change "their" to "the". This is because "that they had left three years before" is presented as a defining clause, yet "their" already seems to (grammatically) determine which homes are meant. ".

  • ".
  • This is quite a fussy point.
