sentence construction

Hello,

1. The last thing I wanted was to upset you.

I am not able to understand the construction of this sentence.

Could anybody explain the construction of this sentence?

I did not want to upset you. It was the last thing written on the list of things that I wanted. The last thing on the list of things that I wanted = I upset you.

  • I did not want to upset you.
  • It was the last thing written on the list of things that I wanted.
  • The last thing on the list of things that I wanted = I upset you.
  • [The last thing (which) I wanted] was [(for me) to upset you].
  • It is an unusual way of saying that you had no intention at all of upsetting me.

I am not sure that this sentence is correct...................

I think this may not be OK as two verbs, "was" and "want" in a sentence.

but if the word "that" added, "The last thing was that I want to upset you"

I want to know if there is any change to meaning of the original sentence "The last thing I wanted was to upset you".
