sentence completion

Hello,

When the student/finished work/

closed their book.

I have to write the sentence according to the events occured, means write first that happed first and then the next.The starting word is

When ----------------------------------.

My understanding is

1. When the students had finished their work, they closed their books.

Is this sentence correct?

Any other alternative?
