Sentence completion

Conceptually, it's hard to reconcile a defense attorney's ___ to ensure that false testimony is not knowingly put forward with the attorney's mandate to mount the most ___ defense conceivable for the client.
A. efforts ... cautious
B. duty ... powerful
C. inability ... eloquent
D. failure ... diversified
E. promise ... informed

I think this is the toughest one I've ever met. First I have no idea what the sentence is all about; second, I can't find the key words that would suggest the answer.

Will you help me out? Thank you.

Thank you, Goldmund.

Maybe "eloquent/powerful" defense indicates "putting forward false testimony". I got you point. Thank you. I just failed to understand the construction of the sentence in the first place. I didn't know the two things to be reconciled are "attorney's duty" and "mandate".

Well, no rule of the thumb I'm afraid... It's the logical relationship between the stated and the offered words. But maybe logic may be a rule of the thumb?
