Sentence completion

C is the right answer, I could tell. But I can't find any reason to rule out D. Could you please help me explaint it?

I guess accumulating the errors implies you just make errors but you're not able to identify them as such. Detecting them suggests you realise you are in the wrong direction. In the overall process of establishing the scientific truth, only then would you be able to rule them out which then enables you to narrow down the possibilities. Hence C but not D.
