Sentence check vol.1

Hi!

Please help me with these sentences:

1.Therefore many schools, especially the technical ones, are under the control of gangs which intimidate and terrorize the powerless students. (should there be "the" control or not?)

2.It is also commonly known that the young people who are the offspring of VIPs or whose parents studied at Harvard or Yale are much more likely to pass the entrance exams to these universities than the candidates who do not have any influential friends or social connections. (should there be "the" offsrping or not?)

3.A survey conducted recently among American students reveals that the most important thing they want from life is career and success, followed by happiness, marriage and family. (should there be: "a" family? or not?)

4.It seems that theatre is less popular with young people nowadays, especially in (...). (should there be "a/the" theatre? or not?)

5.Keep distance to yourself and to things which put you out of patience. They are not so important as you think. (can we say: keep distance to yourself? Does it even exist?)
