Sentence check vol. 16

Hello!

Please help me with the following sentences:

  1. (it’s about gambling addicts) They become preoccupied with gambling and find it impossible to control. (shouldn’t it be “to control it.”?)
  2. Every eighth German declares that he or she is able to communicate in English. (is it correct or should it be “that they are able...”?)
  3. If they don't master English, they will be overtaken by other nations as uneducated, outdated and ridiculous. (is “overtaken” the right word there – I mean is this sentence logical?)
  4. According to the report "Education at a Glance" presented by the OECD, adult Germans very rarely attend language courses and are motivated to learn only if an ignorance of English becomes a barrier to their professional career. (shouldn’t it be “if the ignorance” or “their ignorance”).
  5. All living things grow and change and so does language. (shouldn’t it be: “so does the language”?)
Thanks a lot.

All five sentences are correct as written. Sentence 3 is a little edgy (tottering on the edge of ungrammatical), but it's okay. The "ungrammatical-ness" or sentence 3 is perhaps deliberate, so that it gets your attention - this is apparently the main point of the article.
