Sentence check - upstairs/above?

The sentence:

Jeff is talking to Sean in his office when the deafening sound of machine gun fire erupts somewhere upstairs.

- Can I write 'upstairs' here if the shooting is going on three floors above where Jeff and Sean are? Or would it be better to write 'above'?

- Also, is the sentence OK and the word choices natural?

Thanks.

anonymous would it be better to write 'above'? Yes. Personally, I use 'upstairs' only in referring to the upper floor of a residence.
