Sentence check?

Could someone please help me with the following sentence? It doesn't feel correct yet.

"Despite this, one possible explanation could be the destruction of the remainders of the exploitative nature of colonial history (‘The scramble for Africa’ and ‘Imperialism in Asia’)."

Preceding part:
"In addition to these observations, it is also important to recognize the negative growth rates for land transportation (‘Roads’ and ‘Rail lines’). Surprisingly, there is no recent literature about this phenomenon."

Explanation:
I want to give a possible reason for the negative growth rates regarding 'Number of Roads' and 'Number of Rail Lines' in my data set (developing countries). I can't find literature on this, but I think it's because these countries destroy the remainders of colonial history. I also mention the exploitative nature. Because many of these roads were used to transport goods, and therefore have become useless.
