Sentence check

Hi,

are the following sentences correct, please?

1] It's hard for me to get acquainted with unknown people since I'm a suspicious person who doesn't believe anyone else but myself.

2] What are you doing this evening? I'll be watching Dexter, or perhaps I'll go for Lost.

3] My mum's dedicated her life to giving a hand to disabled people.

4] Do you consent to impose / approve of imposing a new policy or would you rather there weren't any changes?

5] She gave a very lucid explanation of how they were going to cheat during the test.

6] The patients are restrained/kept from using potentially hazardous materials.

7] What's the span/width of this bridge? It's one hell of a big bridge!

8] The victims sustained/suffered several head and chest injuries, which was the cause of the victims' death.

9] This job occasionally involves/encompasses working over-time.

In the 4th sentence, why not "consent"?
In the 9th sentence, why cannot I use "encompass"??
I thought these two meant the same thing as the other verbs...
