Sentence check

Microsoft Word is calling sentence #1 a fragment but not #2, can someone please explain why and which one is correct? Thanks.

1) As the largest country in South America, Brazil encompasses many regions of varying geography.
2) As the largest country in South America, Brazil encompass many regions of varying geography.
