Sentence analysis

Hi there teachers,

How would you analyse the structure of the following sentence, please?

-She wasn't very good at sports; however, she stood first every year in her class.

Is that a compound sentence - two independent clauses connected with "however"? Also, could you please tell me the function of the word "however" in that context?
