Sentence Analysis

a. She did nothing but/except watch tv.

Could you please analyse the sentence above, in terms of parts of speech.

b. I will be home at 7pm to make dinner before I go to my piano lesson.

Does the adverbial clause in bold modify the verb aspect of the infinitive phrase to make dinner or the verb phrase will be home?

Thank you

I believe there are two ways to analyze a). "but" and "except" are prepositions; "(to) watch tv" is a prepositional phrase used as object of preposition. She did nothing but/except that she did watch tv.

She did nothing but/except that she did watch tv. (full conjunctions)

I believe that in b) the adverbial clause modifies "to make dinner."

(I will be home at 7 p.m. so that I will have enough time in order

Thanks, I agree.

What is a full conjunction? [:^)]

I guess that it means the complete conjunction.

In your sentence, you used only "but," so we decided to call it a preposition.

But when you say "but that," then you are using the full or complete conjunction. So we can no longer call "but" a preposition.

Cheers!
