Is the following sentence error free or does it have some grammatical error?

Despite its cultural importance, the Daily Gazette lost 70 percent of its subscribers since 1920 and, by 1955, was losing as much as $200,000 a year.

Further information is not given about the sentence. However, the verb lost is supposed to be incorrect but I can't understand how is it so.
