Sentence

"He laughed like a jerk he was."
Is this a valid sentence? Or should it be:
"He laughed like a jerk that he was."
Why?

That is optional. You can use it either with or without the relative pronoun.

Thanks. I do have to concentrate on articles. "The" gave the meaning I was going for. I appreciate the comment.
