Hi
Please help me with this.
He could see in them a seriousness far beyond their age/ages.
Question- Here the reference is to two children. So I think ages is grammatical. However ages sounds a little odd.

It seems to me that their ages couldn't be very far apart. They're both children. For that reason I don't think there would be any harm in using the singular age. I think you would need a very different scenario to justify their ages. I can't even think of one just now.

Yes, as you have guessed their ages aren't far apart- a difference of just two years.
