Sentence

Quoted from David Beckham

"Tonight hurts more than any night probably, but we stick together, that's all we can do....."

Is there anything wrong if "that" is putting here or should i replace with which instead.

Thx

Hi,

that is OK here.

Strictly speaking "that's" should be preceded by a semi-colon or should start a new sentence, but it's correct to say "that's" there.

"Tonight hurts more than ..., but we stick together; that's all we can do."
"Tonight hurts more than ..., but we stick together. That's all we can do."

You might rephrase it like this:

"Tonight hurts more than any night probably, but we stick together, which is all we can do..."

(I like the slight bathos of the "probably".)

Is it still bathos if the 'probably' comes before 'hurts'? Is it the word itself, or its position after 'night'?

"Tonight hurts more than any night..."

I think it's the position – first the melodramatic soul diva effect; then the Englishly cautious afterthought.

(As if someone might have said to him, Are you sure about that, David? More than any other night? What about Argentina? "Well, yes, Argentina was worse...")
