Sent/dilvered a note

Coming close to Aneityum, the captain refused to land them on the island. He waited a distance away from the island until a trader's boat came out to them to see what they wanted. The Patons sent a note to one of the missionaries already there telling them they wanted to land.

Hi,

Is it the same to say "delivered a note" instead of "sent a note in the above?" Thanks.
