Sensex trade

The Sensex continues to trade in the positive terrain but on a flat note. Consumer durables, FMCG, auto and PSU stocks traded marginally higher, while IT and realty declined. Both Sensex and Nifty were trading above 2-month high.
At 11.50 a.m., the Sensex was trading up 13.02 points or 0.07% at 17,532.28 with 15 components gaining. Meanwhile, the Nifty was trading higher by 3.50 points or 0.07% at 5,249.40 with 28 components gaining.
The 30-share benchmark index, BSE Sensex opened flat with a rise of 12.21 points or 0.07% at 17,531.47, while the broad based NSE Nifty started with a fall of 13.35 points or 0.25%, at 5,232.55.

Could you please explain to me what "trade" means here?

I know "trade" means "buy and sell goods" but I wonder what it means "trade" here. Moreover, I wonder how "sensex" can trade a non-living thing.
