Sense of actuality?

Hi! everyone.
Could someone rephrase the sentence below? Also I couldn't understand the meaning of "sense of actuality".(This sentence refers to man and woman's married life).
Man and woman have to redefine their relationship with intense impersonality and sense of actuality.
What does this sentence mean?
Thanks!

It's unclear, but it seems to mean this. Men and women must redefine their relationship in a very objective and very realistic way. Clive

It means ''deliberately change the nature of their relationship'.
eg Tom has always been very bossy, and Mary has accepted that.
But now they both want to be more equal partners.
