Sense

Hello,

I need some help with understanding one fragment of The way to the Rainy Mointain.

A cricket had perched upon the handrail, only a few inches away from me. My line of vision was such that the creature filled the moon like a fossil. It had gone there, I thought, to live and die, for there, of all places, was its small definition made whole and eternal

"for there (...) its small definition made whole and eternal -> I just cannot grasp the sense of this sentence. Could anyone help ?

Top answer

because there [= on the Moon], its small definition was made whole and eternal This is a poetic idea, and the meaning is largely in the reader's imagination. I would guess that "definition" is supposed to mean something like "form".
