send someone shopping

Hello, everyone!

I found following paragraph ;

'I sent him shopping and he should have been back by now. He was getting some supplies for us.'

Regarding the sentence - 'I sent him shopping' I wonder how this syntex is possible? Is this sentence grammatically correct?

I guess the preposition FOR is still needed before shopping' to describe the purpose of 'send'.

Await your opinions,
