I'm not familiar with the expression "sent out" in this context. You're sure you don't mean "sent off" (i.e. shown a red card and dismissed from the pitch)?

I took it to mean 'sent out as a substitute', which I have heard used, but admittedly very infrequently.

Is that what you meant, irlandes?

I think I would come up with the same interpretation, but I feel there is a more usual expression for this, possibly "sent on" or "brought on".
