send cue in elevator

The old man cued his partner who tended to get out of the elevator when it stopped on the 4th floor, that they were not at the ground floor yet.

Can someone inspect my sentence?

'Cue' is not a natural word here. It usually means 'signal someone to do something', but here the point is 'not to do something', ie not to get of the elevator. I suggest eg The old man indicated to / told his partner , who tended to get out of the elevator when it stopped on the 4th floor, that they were not at the ground floor yet.
