semmicolon

Hi. I have a question.
In this sentence
"Don't be fooled by the calmness of the fish, though; taking care of fish can be hard work, and if you don't properly take care of your aquarium, your fish will have poor health and high levels of stress."

why the semmicolon follows though, not precedes it? Can we use semmicolon not before a conjunction but after it?
