Semicolon vs dash

I think I get it right most of the time, but sometimes I'm just not sure. For example, consider the sentences:
* I've been to New York a couple of times; It's a very nice place.
That's how I would write it, but I'm not too sure about it; the confusion is probably a result of the fact that the dash seems to be much more prevalent.
(Did I use the semicolon correctly in the above sentence as well?)
