We should try to treat other people around us like our grandmother treated us; i.e., with mercy and humility. -- I know that 'i.e.' stands for 'that is'. Is it appropriate to use the abbreviated form here?
He took his sister along to the family gathering; and he stopped by a store to get some snacks, in case the children get out of hand. -- Normally, when there is a conjunction like 'and' or 'but', the semicolon is not used unless 1) the clause that comes after contains an internal comma (or commas), and 2) the sentential situation requires the semicolon to avoid ambiguity. Personally I cannot think any examples for No. 2 (no.2?? When should we capitalize the word 'number'? How about in this case?) off my head right now.
