"semicolon + one of them" or "comma + one of which"

(1) Last week, the pilot witnessed three UFOs; one of them was silver in color.

(2) Last week, the pilot witnessed three UFOs, one of which was silver in color.

Question: Which is correct? If both are correct, which sounds idiomatic?
