Let me add a couple more comments.

When do you actually use a semicolon? Rarely. Maybe once a year.

A semi-colon well used should make the reader pause to think about the nature of the close connection between the two parts of the sentence.

It sounds stupid to say eg I took the garbage out; the can was full.
