semicolon

Hi. Should or can I use a semicolon in a sentence like this: I always ask that type a question; have you ever seen it before?

Top answer

I often do the same. The two sentences are closely related and complete within themselves.

I'd use the colon there.

Yes, I see why you would. It all depends on the meaning of "it".
Without the surrounding context, the two interpretations are:
"I always ask that type of question (referring back to previous text concerning types of question)..."
or "I always ask this type of question (introducing the next clause)..." in which case the colon is appropriate.
