semi-colon usage

Is the use of a semi-colon in the following phrase correct ?

"It's a pet-peeve of mine; it's irked me for years."

My understanding is that both halves of a phrase where the semi-colon is used correctly should be complete sentences in their own right, and I wonder, specifically, whether "it" as used in both parts correctly constitutes the subject for the requisite main clauses.

Comments greatly appreciated - thanks !

That's a perfect example of correct semicolon use, though there's no need to hyphenate 'pet peeve'. Rover
