Semi-colon or coma

Hi - I'm hoping someone can help me with this sentence. Is the following sentence punctuated correctly? I am not sure the ; should be in front of the "for you are one with me? I am used to using the ; with the word "and"... etc.

"When one does well, all receive credit; for you are one with us."

If I should use the semi-colon there - why?

Thank you for your help, Chris
