Hi, I have a query in regard to the use of semi-colons or colons in a list. Here's the sentence with a bit of context:
"Between 0 and 2 changes in possession, 'final area 3' changes percentage from 28, then to 26 and then to 44, which is an increasing trend. The same occurs for area 2; 12 to 47 to 44; and then to area 1; 4 to 7 to 13."
I am sure my use of the semi-colons isn't right, but I don't want to use brackets. Any help would be useful.
Thanks
Someone yesterday was slightly confused so here was my response with more of a description
I am talking about changes in possession during a game of rugby. One of the variables I am investigating is names 'changes in possession'. So basically i want to say, "The change from 0 to 1 to 2 changes in possession are...
Yes , they are all percentages of the total number of tries scored in each of 4 areas of the pitch.
"final area 3 changes percentage from 28 to 26 and then to 44, which is an increasing trend. The same occurs for area 2; 12 to 47 to 44; and then to area 1; 4 to 7 to 13." is the sentence again
You will have to use brackets or m-dashes; you cannot have internal colons, and semicolons are simply wrong punctuation. The same occurs for Area 2 (12 to 47 to 44) and then to Area 1 (4 to 7 to 13). The same occurs for Area Two—12 to 47 to 44—and then to Area One—4 to 7 to 13.
