Semi colon and fragments

I am aware that semi colon requires two complete sentences. Are there exceptions?

For example:
I was only sick for two days; my friend had been sick for two years.

Can we also write this as:
I was only sick for two days; my friend, for two years.

In the above, the rule about semi colon is broken because the second sentence is not complete. Is that okay in case we want to avoid repetition?

Thank you so much.
