Semi-colon?

Is the semi-colon here appropriate?


The number of males studying full-time over the three periods varied from 10,000 to 20,000 over the three periods; meanwhile, the females studying full-time decreased steadily from 20,000 in 1995 to about 10,000 by the end of 2010.

this is better?

It rarely is, and not this time. A new sentence is better. I remember when I first found out about the semicolon in grade schol. I used it a lot. I shouldn't have. The clause after the semicolon has to be at least somewhat consequent upon the one before it.
