Semantics

Recently, I heard I woman describing another woman and she used the underlined adjectives in the sentence below to describe her:

"She is young and attractive but not beautiful."

MY CLARIFYING QUESTIONS:

1. When referring to a woman, what is the difference between beautiful and pretty?

2. I do understand "attractive" but what could have been the semantic meaning of the above description when making the distinction between attractive and beautiful?

Please let me know.

apatzinguense 1. When referring to a woman, what is the difference between beautiful and pretty? That's quite subjective, but I guess you could say that pretty is good to look at, and beautiful is pretty plus something deeper.
