No, there are no 'rules' as of yet, but there certainly are tendencies. I'd like to learn more about why sometimes words with affectionate overtones (barbie, cutie, nappy) are spelt '-y' and sometimes '-ie'.

Your last space (for reasons) permits only about 30 characters, so I could not explain. Only 'selfie' looks natural because that is the way Oxford spelt it when 'selfie' appeared in the newspaper a few weeks ago as 'the word of the year' or something like that.
