"self" + words

When we add Self in front of words like self confidence, self esteem, etc. Is there a meaning difference or nuance between self confidence and confidence and so on?

What do you native English speakers think? Thank you so much as usual for your help and time.

"self" is necessary with "esteem" as in this example:

She has low self-esteem.

Self adds the meaning of an internal attribute.
He needs to improve his self-confidence.
