Self-study / Self studying

When somebody asks me about how I reached my decent level of English, I want to tell them => by myself and at home (by studying alone under no direct supervision of a teacher or attendance in a class).

"I was studying English by self-study / self studying."

"I engaged in self-study / self studying."

I am actually at a loss to know how to convey this kind of thing correctly. Please, feel free to put forward a correct way of saying that or correct the sentences above.

Thanks a lot in advance.

To be honest, this is probably the first time I have heard of this phrase.

There is always something new to learn.

Thank you, CalifJim, I will use it from now on. I hope I will be understood, haha.
