Self-consciousness/awareness

Hi

Is there a big difference between self-consciousness and self-awareness?

For example: "Animals have no self-consciousness and no self-awareness". What does it actually mean? Is there a simpler way to say the same?

I would just choose one of them. A psychologist may perceive a difference, but I doubt the layman (like me) does.
