Selection process is competitive/hard

Could someone tell me whether it is incorrect to say that the selection process is hard/difficult when you're trying to say that it is hard to get accepted into a university.

Hi, Here's the basic idea. If you say that the selection process i s difficult. it sounds like you mean that you have to fill out a lot of confusing forms.
